Tacoma has some of the best old houses in the South Sound, from the North End and the Stadium District to Hilltop and the neighborhoods around them. It also has a lot of floors that have been settling for 80 or 100 years. When you pull up old carpet or tired hardwood and find a mess underneath, that’s where we come in.
What we fix under Tacoma floors
Concrete ups and downs. Old basement slabs and garage conversions are rarely flat. Carpet can hide it, but hard flooring can’t. Sometimes we level just the problem spots, and sometimes the whole floor needs it.
Noisy floors. Creaks happen when the subfloor isn’t fastened tightly to the framing. We find those spots and secure them.
Warped plywood. Around here, plenty of homes were framed during the rainy season, and the subfloor swelled and twisted. We sand down the raised areas and fill the low ones.
Dips and soft spots. Usually water damage or a poor original install. We replace the damaged section with new plywood and make it flush.
Slanted floors. Common in basements and in older homes on post-and-beam foundations. Depending on the flooring going in, we level the concrete or build up the wood subfloor. If the framing itself needs work, we can handle that too.
Why it matters
Getting the subfloor flat and sturdy before you install hardwood, laminate, luxury vinyl, tile or carpet is the single best thing you can do for your new floor. It’s also what the manufacturers require. Skip it and you’re likely to be looking at gaps, cracks and callbacks within a year or two.
